Just trying to free up much needed disk space and have discovered on running TreeSize Pro - 1,568mb is given over to System Volume Information. And most puzzlingly, the corresponding graph indicates a whopping 2,734mb associated with a file called "_restore {F73F117F-42A4-4583-90F0-CC2C15AA0BDB}"

When I click on this file (from within TreeSize) it breaks down into 9 separate entities named RP413 through to RP421 (presumably restore points?) matching when totalled up, the larger of the two figures: 2.7GB

so two questions

1. how do I best safely get rid of it?
2. Why the 1gig discrepancy?

disable system restore

all windows pc's have that folder its used for file format information i think..

just disable system restore and the size of the folder will dramatically decrease

Disable system resotore... the space you're wanting to free up is all used by that feature. Disabling it will clear your restore points.

How radically though? is it safe to manually scrub the content?

pretty sure you can't open the folder anyway..

just disable system restore

control panel, system, restore tab.

go to...

c:\windows

Tools, FolderOptions, View, Show Hidden Files and Folders

any folder with a $ in front of it can be safely deleted, these are windows update restore points (let you remove hotfixes if you need to) should save a few more mb..

also, this tool is a must have for temp files cleanup.. (has a regcleaner too)
