How-to completely BLACKOUT a room

For my old flat, I bought blackout curtain linings from Rosebys or a similar soft furnishings store. They weren't expensive and did the job very well. Just measure your present curtains before you pop down.
Ikea sell pull down roller blinds made of blackout material.
Neither solution allow any light through and both are a little more room friendly than paint.

Go buy some blackout material from John Lewis.
Costs very little, you could press your face into it and look straight at the sun and you wouldn't see any light at all.
Bricks and mortar are also fairly effective at blocking out light
