Highly confusing i have found a guide but it just adds to the confusion for me.

Right so I have my router downstairs connected to the modem

It's LAN TCP/IP Setup

192.168.1.1
subnet mask is 255.255.255.0

Use Router as DHCP Server is ticked yes
Starting IP Address = 192.168.1.2
Ending IP Address = 192.168.1.100 < which I have changed from the default 192.168.1.254

right so i leave this as it is or do i disable dhcp on this router ? or the second router that I am going to use as a switch ?

Right next I am supposed to plug in my 2nd router the one I am going to use as a switch and I go to Lan settings again and change it's IP to

192.168.1.101 ? then reboot then log back in to disable dchp ?
subnet mask 255.255.255.0

and that's it ? then i switch everything off then boot up the modem downstairs then this one up here ? i don't need to change ssid or anything ?

Yep, you've got it right, change the IP, then reboot and disable DHCP. The wireless will bridge over fine just like a normal access point.
You might also want to make sure that your downstairs router doesn't have 192.168.1.101 in its address pool for dhcp - set the pool to 192.168.1.10 - 192.168.1.30 or something.
