How to connect full cover to universal block??

Hi,

I have a full cover 3GB GeForce GTX 580 Hydro Copper 2 and an air cooled GTX 580 (and an EK universal VGA block standing by). I currently just have the Hydro card in a watercooled loop. How could I add the universal block GTX 580 next to it for SLI??

Thanks,

Toby

Umm maybe I am misunderstanding your question but it seems to me you would:

1. Attach the universal block to your second gtx 580
2. Put the second 580 in your computer in an adjacent pci-e slot
3. Connect the outlet of the first 580 to the inlet of the second (you can just use tubing and fittings for this)
4. Attach an SLI bridge connector to the 2 cards

Done.

Edit: obviously I skipped the part where you drain your loop etc as I assumed it was common sense :)

if your full cover block has outlets on the back you may be best putting that card lower then going straight into the universal block but that depends if there is enough room after barbs are fitted, other wise you may have to make do with a large tube loop round.

it's point 3 I'm having difficulty understanding. That would be easy if both cards were full block but the universal one has it's input/ouput's in a completely different place to a universal block. The tubing won't bend like that without kinks. I just waqnt confirmation of which fittings/adapters I should use (I'm guessing 2 or 4 90 degree bends would do it but it's hard to gauge)

Oh I see. is it possible to post a photo or diagram of the blocks to help us visualise the issue? On a purely technical note try to use as few 90 degree adapters as possible as they are really bad for flow.

Edit: Nevermind I forgot you told us what blocks you had in the opening post, I will have a look for myself :)

Im guessing you would ave to go up and over and under with the tubing or something funky like that

Hmm. I can't post photos as I'm hesitant to modify the air card with the EK block until I have a solution. I can't be the first person to mix full cover blocks with universal ones though...

Maybe it wound be easier to sell the air cooled card and buy a full block card?

I had the same problem when I bought a non-reference 6950.

If you click my sig link there's a pic of how I've done it. Use plenty of anti kink coil and it's ok (mine kinked the first time I did it but it's fine now, just be patient in getting it perfect before adding coolant).

Barbs would be better than the compression fittings I used as compression fittings cause the tubing to rotate slightly when tightened making the alignment more difficult.

When I get rid of my 6950s I'll just use 2x VGA blocks rather than FC blocks as they can be connnected reasonably easily and in theory will last for any future cards.

You've got me thinking now.
When I take mine apart I will likely re-configure it as follows:
  • Green = Mobo
  • Black = Cards
  • Dark Blue = FC Block
  • Light Blue = Universal Block
  • Red = Tubing

This should allow for more tubing between the 2 cards making it easier to route without kinks.

I'm using 2 universal blocks and I've used 2 phobya extensions on each one and 2 90 degree compressions to send the tubing where I want it without it needing to bend too much
