I've always been a Nvidia fan, and am now looking at a new card for RTW2. The rest of my spec is fine. Just the card needs updating.

Everyone keeps going on about the 7950 being a great card and it is indeed, a lot cheaper than say, a 770.

Is there much change in performance or driver issues? Is the 770 worth the extra £70 or so, or should I bite the bullet and finally get an ATI?
 
The 770 is a lot quicker than the 7950, it's also very decently priced.
The 7950 trades blows with the 760, if it was my money i'd go with the 770 - saying that though you wont be dissapointed with the 7950 as it is by no means a slouch of a card and overclocks fantastically it also comes with 8 games providing you get one from this list: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/productlist.php?groupid=701&catid=56&subid=1502

I have a 7950 which was my first ATI card since a 9800SE AIW circa 2003. Although it performs well in modern games I do regret not sticking with NV:

-Secondary monitor won't run at 120hz, it never even occurred to me that there would be an issue as it's always been fine before, but my card doesn't have 2x dual link DVI
-Occasionally if a game crashes the clocks get stuck in the wrong mode causing this random flickering effect so I have to reboot to cure it. Normally not an issue but in this extreme heat (31C at 11pm) my normal overclock isn't 100% stable it seems.
-OpenGL performance in my main online game is worse than than my previous card (GTX470)
-Drivers aren't as good in terms of refresh override etc

I think such cards will probably suit the vast majority of mainstream users but I'm quite fussy about things that probably wouldn't bother a lot of people. My next card definitely won't be an AMD.

Most of the 7950 reviews are based on old drivers, which perform a lot worse than the recent ones, and they pre-date the 770. Reviews of the 770 will tend to compare against a reference 7950, again often from old drivers.

A typical 7950 factory overclocked will perform around a stock 7970, and with a manual overclock can match a 7970 GE. e.g.

It's the overclocking potential as well as the 3GB memory that makes them popular. As for drivers, since AMD started sorting out the driver issues this year, I've had none at all. RadeonPro is an amazing piece of free software too, which can add on features you don't get normally (e.g. adaptive vsync, special AA modes, all kinds of overrides).

I've got 2 7950s, they're great. I get none of the issues that HangTime spoke about.

A 7950 with an average overclock will get you 770 beating performance. Get a good clocker and you'll get more performance than an overclocked 770.

Not to mention the 8 free games overclockers are giving away with AMD cards at the moment.
 
Been with AMD for about 15+ years and the GTX770 is my very first Nvidia card and boy what a card:eek:
I came from a crossfire 6970 setup to this single 770 and I have never had this smoothness before, Minimum frame rate is much higher also of note is just the sheer quality of the graphics so much more detail much more than I have seen with AMD some of it is subtle but it's there.

Just had to laugh at this, it's been proven time and time again there's absolutely no difference to image quality apart from colours may look slightly different.

All those years I was using AMD I have never accused any Nvidia user as a (fanboy) i'm just a guy using an Nvidia card and happy with my purchase.

Maybe the comment about how the image looking better may seem silly to you both but that's just my thoughts, It looks like there's more detail I cant help that so no need to be so dismissive ;(
 
If it's looking like there's more detail it's really because you're happy with the card, placebo effect and all. I think that saying nvidia cards make games look much better than AMD ones is going to start arguments :)

Probably because you're now looking for detail since buying a new card. There really isn't much difference if any in IQ from either brands, unless you're using specific settings from them like TXAA, PhysX etc etc.

just to add petrol to the fire, ive always preferd the image quality of amd cards, but then thats just my thoughts and not something i would like to make an issue out of

If anyone is being a fanboy here then surely it's him lol? It's not something that's down to personal opinion either as the image quality thing has been done to death and proven time and time again that there's nothing in it.

Wasn't the case when it was touted AMD had better IQ.

Although, you've said colours may look slightly different, that would effect the IQ, one could certainly have better IQ than the other due to better colours........
