Hi,

I've got a number of original software CD's/DVD's that I want to backup to .iso files on my pc. What is the best software to do this??? ideally free???

I already have daemon tools and nero, is it possible to do it with these? and wondered if there was advantages of using one over another (compression levels etc) or whether there is another piece of software which is better than both those for this task?

Cheers.

I think ImgBurn can do this, might be wrong though.

Aye i've got imgburn too... but couldn't see how to do it in there.

Open Imgburn and click the "Mode" menu and switch it to "Build". The main window changes a bit and on the left hand side you can select stuff you want to built into your new ISO. After you've picked the stuff, make sure it's set to write to file and not to disk (there is a little button in the bottom left of the window. Then just give the file a name and click the write to file button.

To my understanding... these methods above would just create a .iso file out of files and folders that i select, therefore skipping boot info etc that is specific to it being on a cd. I want an 'exact' copy of the cd's on my pc... not just the files/folders stored on the cd.

Or am i missing something here... and the boot info etc is just stored in the autorun file and thats all i need?

Please advise.

Cheers

Try WinISO or PowerISO, not sure if they are free but might be worth a look.

EDIT: If you have Nero you can create .nrg images.

An exact copy would probably need a tool like BlindWrite or Alcohol 120% with the correct settings enabled, although it wouldn't end as an ISO in likelyhood.

IMGBurn in Read mode makes and exact copy of the disc as a .iso if its an bootable disk the iso is bootable. its a 1-to-1 copy of the source.
