is it possible to enter a BT phone number into one of those availability kind of checkers and see what the maximum supported speed on that line is?

You can only tell by getting a line really and trying. Distance from the exchange and quality of the line along with number of other people like yourself in the area.

Overhead lines are generally worse then an underground cable connection but mainly its distance from the exchange, 500m is nice
