How to diagnose system freezing?

I have a Samsung Q330 laptop with a Crucial V4 256Mb SSD installed. Over the last couple of months I've had repeated problems with the O/S (Windows 7) freezing - i.e. not responding at all, and needing a cold reboot to revive it. I've also had Windows reporting disk problems on 2-3 occasions, which I've let Windows repair following a reboot each time.
I've now re-installed the O/S 3 times in the last 4 weeks but the problem persists. I don't know if it's the SSD, RAM or something else that's causing these problems - what's the best way of diagnosing this?

Have you made any hardware changes to it recently? (You mention the SSD but I'm not sure if that came with it or you added it)

What does the windows event log say?

The only hardware change is the SSD, which was installed more than 6 months ago. A while before the last freeze the Windows system event log reported this:

The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Ide\IdePort0.

(but this was about 40 minutes before the system froze)

Have you installed all the latest drivers for the SSD?
Did you install any utilities?
Check windows defrag to see if windows is trying to do a scheduled TRIM.

According to the log, windows is having problems with the SSD.
Are there any settings in the BIOS for the disk?

I flashed updated firmware for the SSD last month, but didn't install any utilities.
Windows Defrag shows a status of "never run" (probably because I only re-installed the O/S a few days ago).
I don't remember making any specific changes in the BIOS for the SSD. Are any recommended?
