ok details

gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5
I7 950
12gb triple channel crucial ballistix pc3-12800 CL9, 1.5v

I can install two chips ok and machine boots up, but if i put a third stick in not much happens and a series of beeps.

Is there something in the bios i maybe have to activate to get this working? I've definately put the other two in the slots the manual says but as soon as the third goes in, it just won't start (i have switched the chips around btw)

Sorry to sound so noob but the last system i built from scratch was an XP3200 lol

cheers

are you installing the memory sticks in the right sockets (i.e the ones of the same colour which will be spaced out not all together)? Have you tried all off the sticks (alone) in memory socket one to check you don't have a faulty memory module?

If you look in my build log (link in sig) you can see towards the top a picture of a tri channel board.Notice the three memory chips are all installed in the blue sockets (may be different colour motherboard to motherboard) and also notice that the blue sockets are spaced out with a black socket in between the ones in the middle

yep mine are the same , all blue scokets for triple channel. Bit when io put it in the third the machine will not boot and then throws out a load of beeps.

a few thing to try m8

1 switch each memory to the slots
2 use different color slots

other than that it could be ur memory is faulty (had that problem a few months a go when i was building a friends pc

I've done some searchs online as well and it seems that people also mentioned deformed pins on the board. Now i did see two but my eyes just arent good enough to try and and flick them back into position.

I think i'll just leave the 8GB as it is and when i take everything out again i'll get someone with good eyesight to have a nudge at the pins.

I did swap the chips around in the two working slots and they all worked fine, and did put them in the other slots as well, but it says that i have the right slots. So i'm thinking it might have something to do with the bent pins

[you need to rest the bios and start again ,
battery pull and all that,
mine did the same when i put an extra 6GB in ,if you look on the board it sticks on C1 on the leds

Does it see all 6gb in BIOS/windows? You need to test all your ram modules one by one in second ram socket from CPU socket, test each stick it will boot into BIOS/windows if alls well, repeat test on other two colour coded ram slots

If its the slot then you have slightly bent CPU pins,if bent you lose memory due to integrated memory controller being built into cpu

I cleared the bios numerous times as i aren't the most knowledgeable about the bios's of the last 4 years or so.

I've never saw a C1 error at all it was something else beginning with a 6

I tried everything in the two slots that worked and each time the 8gb woiuld show up. As soon as i put any of the chips in the third blue socket the machine would error out.

you have slightly bent cpu pins then,or you have a broken copper trace within the mb itself from the ram slot to the cpu socket(this is caused by the mb flexing or applying too much pressure when mounting cpu heatsink),would be good if you can post a pic of the cpu socket/pins

you wont notice any difference anyway with 8gb in dual channel from 12gb in tri channel

I know i definately had two slightly bent pins, i tried to get a picture but whatever i did i just couldn't get a decent picture out of it.

I Used a D-SLR as well to no joy

i fixed a few boards with bent pins, where you live? im in birmingham, whatever you do dont break any pins off,i wouldnt mess unless your really confident ect

just up from you in Stoke on Trent, how much as an estimate to have a looksee at it?

no idea, but im about to go to manchester to pick up cheap cpu,so maybe i could swing by,mostly would be petrol costs, unless you trust me enough to post? upto you

try and post pic if you can,and id have some idea on how to help you
