How to escape this island post Brexit?

PS, I actually like Germany, but needs to modernise and get with the times. Also VAT is only 16% during corona. That makes big ticket items like vehicles very cheap. Almost been temped to buy and register one there recently.

A 3% VAT reduction is surely only making vehicles slightly cheaper.

I was gonna say. Dude writes worse than me lol. I almost read it in a Spanish accent for some reason.

Get married to your Portuguese gf and start a naturalisation claim for you. Buy a crappy white van and fill it full of your junk and drive 24h to wherever you are going.

Not sure why you think it will be better? Good luck though.

I wouldn't want to move to a different country, especially Germany, oh wait....

But no especially Germany. They hate Brits.

Its a culture clash. For Germans breaking rules would be unthinkable, for Brits rules only apply when someone is watching :P

I worked in Spain in 1979 before they joined the common market. My view is that as long as you have the skills, a keen employer, personality and some of their language, you can get a work visa for almost any country.

If the intention is to get a bar job in Ibiza or Benidorm or just bum around Europe doing casual stuff, it will be harder after brexit.

Also I will add that Germany even with its differences is a good choice as they do not hate the brits, they are quite similar in outlook and they drink decent beer.

Just get a good friend to drive a rental van and take it back to the UK OP (or do it yourself and fly back out to Germany if that's not an option). I did this and instead of the ~£2k the removal companies were quoting, it cost me around £600 for the van rental and around £500 in fuel. I also stayed in an Airbnb but seeing as you're going to Germany you wouldn't need to do this. It would be a lot cheaper than that for you because I was moving to Finland.

With regards to learning German, my advice is to learn it now. If there's a beginners class starting in your area take it before you move, because apparently language lessons aren't cheap in Germany.

Ok crazy I had a very different experience of Germany/Berlin, only a holiday mind you...

I do know people living in East Berlin that love it, but that's like saying living in a hipster part of London is like England.

I admit I know nothing of real Germany

Germany does have a better pension and medical care

Well I've had completely the opposite experience. Ze Germanz have a great sense of humour and I've always found them to be incredibly friendly. YMMV.

People will argue til they are blue in the face that posh southerners and people from the midlands and northerners are all vastly different, however all of Germany is the same.

If you want to move to europe then marry her.

Most of the hurdles are automatically jumped as far as visas and residency stuff. Then its just the logistics of moving. You'll have no problems.
with the wage he said he can get I doubt he needs to marry to live somewhere.

unless it's to get citizenship faster

all Germans are masculine brutes according to every swiss person I've ever talked to :D
I think I only ever met one actual German and she was really quiet, but spoke english at-least unlike most swiss people my age.

I'm going to assume most german women are just as hot as the swiss german ladies though so OP should hold off on that marriage if he moves there :D

Yup I don't need to marry just so I can be a bum living in Germany.

Please note that Germany is one place I am considering. I am also considering Amsterdam

Once the UK has left the EU proper (i.e. no more transition period), you might find that taking rental vehicles out of the countries isn't allowed. Not because of EU laws, but because the rental companies are likely to not allow it.

Germany, even Amsterdam, though ?
In your 20's - well, go somewhere where you can feel the heat of the sun on your back - the resonating phrase was plagiarized from a podcast I heard last week.
-----------> S. Europe.

ediy: 2K removals is cheap, more like 4K

I can answer any NZ expat questions you may have 413x (if you're serious). I also note thast Bes has a thread open around a potential move to Aus - maybe keep an eye on that as well?

Yeah I'm serious. It's a dream. All my hobbies, interests are out there in abundance. Culture and remoteness are bonuses too.

When I looked at list a few months back I was unsure if I'd be eligible. I work in software engineering. But my degree isn't related (molecular biology).

I would be surprised if there was a significant change, since most of the large rental companies already allow you to take care outside the EU today.

Normally you can take them into countries that follow the EU 3rd directive. Some non-EU countries follow this.

It think after the transition insurance is going to be the main problem. I've already seen many motorcycle policies withdraw their like-for-like cover for European travel. MCE used to offer 6 months.
