How to find out a previous connection IP Address

Not a good idea. I live in Germany and have already asked a couple of lawyers in this area and they say ignoring it is the worst thing you can do - they'll just come back again and again, raising the fine with each letter until I have to appear in court.

There have been many scams like this in the past. Best bet would be to ignore it. I very much doubt anyone would just ask you to pay up a sum of money via a letter for doing nothing. I'd class this as a type of harassment.

It's a Speculative Invoice, along the same lines as the Private Parking Company scam that has boomed since the outlawing of clamping...
Ignore anything that isn't stamped official court summons and relax.
Any responses to them just gets you onto the "Hooked Fish" list.

Ignore it.

This is what they've done:

  • Downloaded a torrent of one of their own films
  • Saved a list of all IP's connected to the swarm at a specific time (all the seeders and leechers currently connected) (this is easily doable in ANY torrent client)
  • Gotten a solicitor to get a court order for the ISP to disclose exactly who was assigned the IP address at the specific time. (remember there are only a few major ISPs in the UK, so it would be very easy.)
  • They then send anywhere between 3000 - 10000 letters depending on how popular the torrent was.
  • Even if 0.1% of the defendants agree to pay up, they have already earned their solicitor fees and made an excellent profit. - which is why they won't bother chasing you up if you ignore it.

Its a bit like the no win no fee solicitors as seen on TV. Except these ones only target media producers.

If they did this then OP wouldn't be getting a letter :p Also OP lives in Germany not that it makes much difference.

You sure it didn't say something like.

Dear Mr Jones

Your ISP has instructed us to prosecute your as you downloaded a movie illegally. We are very angry at you and we have your IP address. You must send $100,000 by western union to the below address or you will taken to court. etc etc

I don't have bittorrent. Never have had it. I have used things like Kazaa (back in the day) and more recently utorrent, but never used bittorrent. Also the film in question isn't even out on DVD yet as far as I'm aware. It's called Parker and it was apparently at the cinema (at least here in Germany) not long ago. Like I said, I had never heard of it before this letter came.

Two things

1) bittorrent is utorrent.
its like you can use ie, chrome, firefox to access the web. Its the same thing with bittorrent and utorrent and numerous other torrent clients.

2) Films are/can be available on torrents before they are released.

Yeah I know. I was just referring to the "buy the DVD option" suggested before where I claim I was merely downloading a data back up to a film I'd already "bought the rights" to.
