How to find out if a property is ex-council?

You think that people would pay market value for council housing? Not to mention council housing is becoming smaller and smaller, the council are already selling it off to housing associations etc.

People would given some light renovation work. Im glad its going the right way anyway :)

A lick of paint would not make a council house go for market value. The structure of the building, the possible facilities (you can't even get a gas fire in the ones around my area). Not to mention the appearance of the area.

[edit] I would get a picture of my area if it was light enough, but there is no way I could see a flat in this area going for market value. I would even say that the council is getting all they can get from rent.

If what you say is true, then they ARE getting market value for them it seems. Thus all my points are immediately invalid in your case :)

Then why were you saying that they are leechers?

Because the vast majority of people in council accomodation are getting subsidised rent, maybe you arnt, but a lot of people are. After all this is the point in the scheme.

But they are paying what it's worth, therefore it would not be subsidised.

Says a lot that you have never been to a council area, but seen one from afar  Noticed you've edited that out though

Maybe you need to go have a look, thats the real world

Who was that pointed at? :o

I posted that i dont believe i have ever been to a council house area, but i deemed it irrelevent as me having been there or not does not change the simple financial facts of the situation :)

If you seen the condition of some of the houses, you may have a different opinion ;)

There arnt any for miles of where i live that i know of, although actually im guessing newbury might have some council stuff somewhere.

Perhaps i would though, yeah. It still begs the question as to why these people have locked themselves into a life of poverty though simply by starting a family too early :(

Not all do that though, I know that there are a lot who do (I've seen some girls from my old school who already have 2 children :( ). But my parents didn't have children until they were 28/29.

Because for a lot of people they would face a life of poverty anyway with or without a family. It's alright waiting till your financially secure before having kids but when that's never going to happen people just do what comes naturally.

There are a lot less opportunities for bettering your life when you're poor than when you're from a relatively well off background.

Seriously, my background had nothing to do with my current line of business. I am not any different to anyone else, i dont even have very good qualifications.

Im with Jez and MonkeyMan.

Me and my girlfriend work hard, earn an average wage, and pay for our mortgage.

I cant afford to start a family, so I'm not going to yet. When I can afford to, I will. The whole point is not living outside of your own means.

And yes, I too resent the fact that I pay £600+ for my mortgage on a 1 bedroom maisonette... and someone else can pay £60 a week for 2 years, then buy the chuffing place with 75% discount.

Way to reward those that scrimp and scrape in order to support themselves :o

That wasn't aimed at you, just in general. Poor people usually stay poor and if todays scroungers are anything to go buy their kids will be in a worse state than they are.

I actually agree with a lot of what you've said, the only thing you got wrong was that the people you think of, when you think of "Council Estate" are nothing at all like the people who have had council houses for a few decades or who have lived in them long enough to buy them. The first lot being a bunch of workshy, system fiddling leechers and the second being the work-till-they-drop and hope the kids can have a better life than they did type.

Remember 20 years ago council housing was about all there was for the majority of people, all these flats, apartments and new housing estates are a recent thing.
