The screws have those plastic sockets but the wall is so weak that the sockets and the screws are hanging on a last thread. The plaster has cracked about 1-2foot mildly. Is there any solution other than re-plastering the entire area and putting new screws in ? I was thinking of putting up a blind instead, but would be cheaper and easier to fix the curtain rail as i don't have a drill. I could rent one at £10 a day.

Often people screw a wooden batten to the wall and then the rail to that. but you will need a drill for that. Won't fix your plaster though. With a wooden batten you can secure it at several places along it's length, distributing the load. £10 a day to hire a drill seems a little expensive, you could buy a cheap one for £15 or so.. or surely just borrow one from someone?

Better to hire a mains sds drill for the job, if there a concrete lintel there, as a cheap dill probably won't touch it.

Hire price is about right for a mains sds drill, depends on area I think, different hire shop have different rates, down here it's between £12- £16 plus vat a day.
