how to get 5.1 via s/pdif creative card

ok so i cant get any 5.1 from my pc, i did get it but only by playing a dvd, it wont work when playing avi, i know the avi is full hd and 5.1 as it works on friends pc so i know its not the avi.

ive tried several media players and none of them work, media player, vlc,kmplayer.

ive looked around google and it keeps telling me to go to sound and choose 5.1 but i dont have that option just 2.1 stereo, there is also suppose to be a sound test within creative which there are files within programs folder but no way of playing them to test each speaker.

what am i doing wrong, its driving me nuts now!!

card is creative x-fi extreme audio
done to LG surround amp using optical cable.

please help!!

Sorry you're out of luck. Your Xtreme Audio card is not a fully featured X-Fi. It's a rebranded Audigy. On a fully featured X-Fi you can pay to get dolby digital live (some have it as standard), which encodes a dolby digital signal that can be sent over optical to your receiver. This is then decoded by your receiver, giving 5.1 This is not available on Xtreme Audio.

When you play a DVD, the pre-encoded signal is passed through to the amp, allowing you to use 5.1.

5.1 should work on your existing card if you connect it up with analogue cables.

right!
its sorted. how i done it!
turn off pc,removed sound card, uninstall ALL drivers for creative, restart pc, turn off pc, install sound card, turn pc on, install origial drivers only nothing else by creative,but still no 5.1.
then got annoyed done more searching on goole and found this ( http://ftp.us.dell.com/audio/R69382.EXE ) on another forum. and while playing the original avi that my friend gave me (knowing x264 hd) that i know has full 5.1 on his pc, installed the link above, while playing the film the file extracted and then disapeared but in doing so all of a sudden full 5.1 came to life.

hope this helps someone cos its driven me mad over past few days!!!!
