We have a squatter with the .com of our domain name - he is an american guy we have offered £5000 for the domain but he does not want to budge. We cant really afford more than that which is a bit annoying as we are a start up.

The domain name is 1roof.com that we want . We have the .org

Also the domain 1roof.co.uk seems to be taken by someone but we cant find out who has this domain either.

What are peoples thoughts ?

Unless there is some malicious intent behind the registration, you have no rights at all. If he doesn't want to sell, he doesn't want to sell. End of. You'll need to pick a different domain.

I think for a startup you'd definately be better going for a slight variation of the domain name like

oneroof.co.uk (if available!)

I think i'd also question the wisdom of spending £5000 as a startup on buying a domain name.

Why is getting the domain name so important? I would suggest investing your money into SEO rather than worrying about domain names, especially as you're a startup. Do you really want to be throwing important capital at something which may have no real impact on your business?

And regarding the 1roof.co.uk domain (assuming you still want it if you can't have the .com), you could send a letter to the registrant's address, or you could email webmaster/postmaster/hostmaster @1roof.co.uk and see if you get a reply. Again, there is no obligation to sell it to you.

oneroof.co.uk (if available!)

Not available in any of the main flavours (.com, .net, .co.uk, etc.)

I dont personally care that much about it - but our investors want us to get it .. this is what he said when we asked how much is was

Not an enormous amount given the domain.

You should do some research regarding domain name prices. There are a few sites that will provide rough estimates. Basically, there are several factors which affect a domain name’s value, including its general applicability, number of characters, recognizability, domain extension (i.e. .com, .net, etc.), branding potential, etc. – all factors that are in favor of the 1roof.com domain name.

Once again, I may be interested in leasing it to you.

Just let me know.

Thanks.

I'm not sure what answer you want from us? He doesn't want to sell it to you for £5000, and you don't want to pay more. Tough luck! He's not obliged to sell. You'll either have to offer more, or live without it.

Leasing a domain would be an absolute disaster - don't even entertain the idea.

How much does it cost to post a poo to America? I'm sure having one drop through his letterbox in a jiffy bag will sort this situation out for you :)

I'm sure for £5k you could pay someone to "liberate" it for you :D.

I was/am in the same situation. Wanted the .com, .co.uk and .org. Got the .org fine but the .com/.co.uk wanted £9k and £850.

Managed to catch the .com when he forgot to renew his registration (got a horrific email from him about that ).

Just waiting for the .co.uk to come up.

Honestly if I take out swearies it looses a lot of it amusement and substantial portions of the text haha.

I'll try and dig it up I'm sure I saved it as it was hilarious at the time :D.
