How to get around all this IE6 hate?

In here and out there.
I know, there's no reason why I should be using IE6 in this day and age, but in a corporate environment there's not much I can do about it.

I'm finding more and more sites will show me the front page and then proceed to lock me out with a popup telling me to get a better browser and will not let me back to the main site.

However, I just linksurfed to a canadian newspaper site which pleasantly reminded me using a hint at the top of the page that I am using an out of date browser and then asked if I would like to upgrade, be reminded later or to ignore the warning from now on.
This allowed me to continue perusing the site in the full knowledge that while it won't look pretty it will at least work.

Is there anything I can do that won't upset the IS bods here yet allow me to continue surfing these sites?

Cheers. :)

firefox portable on a usb stick? or install it your desktop/documents folder - it doesn't require admin priviledges but i would check your IT policy first. it's not something worth risking your job over.

The IS policy is pretty locked down... the usual really, no unauthorised software nor USB sticks.
Ah well. thanks.

We use IE6 where I work too (retail); it's rather impressive how such an old web browser can make a Core 2 Duo machine on a decent internet connection feel like a beleaguered 486. So many websites take forever to load, and quite a few just don't load properly.

They did send down a bulletin allowing a certain department to upgrade to IE7 in order to ensure compatibility with a new ordering system, but sadly the same mercy wasn't granted elsewhere.

As a developer, a lot of my clients are in a corporate environment and so I have to support IE6. It's a friggin nightmare :(

This is why devs are starting to shun IE6 completely - it's the only way to get people off it.
