How to get in as an IT Technician?

Perfectly possible to get 40-50k doing mainly MS stuff, by becoming expert in a given area.

Complicated migrations for example, merging AD forests, Exchange GAL's collapsing domains etc etc. The hairy stuff that your average internal IT chap would only see once in a lifetime.

Dont :|

Im level 1 myself @ PCW, and tbh I can see why everyones saying better off doing Retail + overtime even. I know Managers at my place get anyware from 25-40k a year and they dont do much....

I think 12k-18k is laughable, level 2 is almost as bad not anyware on a level in which u could live or get a morgage.

It maybe the wiser to go linux/mac or other like everyone says...

God i could laugh at people that say stay out of IT and so on, just because you didn't like it doesn't mean someone else will. As for highlander between 12k-16k laughable you may be shocked to know how many people live on that and live a happy life. Maybe if people just spend money they didn't have all the time they might have more to spare. Also you say level2 is as bad? Well if that is say around 20k-25k how on earth could you not live on that. You could clearly rent a place without much worry and to be honest anyone that can see the way the world is heading wont want a morgage. But even if they did you would be doing alright. Now i work in IT myself i went from nearly 30k but the owner fell ill and stopped the business. Now i work 4 mile from home and earn about 20-21k i dont owe anyone a penny and am happy with that wage, but due to the councils here being turned into around 7 super councils around 2009 i wont be getting anymore money but that doesn't worrry me as i never spend more than i have in cash. And i love my job to be honest.

Remember that it's a lot cheaper when you live outside of London or the South East. £12K-£18K is very reasonable living wage in Glasgow and possibly even the North of England, depending on your living arrangements. It's not going to get you a large house and car but it will give the original poster finances for further study.

Good point there too. A house which would cost you 250,000 in england might only cost around 120,000 here (NI) and be bigger and all.

Take a look for yourself. Just check some websites

Heres one example not sure if its a good one or not. But this is a nice house and not far from me. Sitting on a hill and over looking the country side.

Another example

Plesae note on that site you will notice houses in the country side cost more because a law was pasted here that you can not build in the country side anymore bar a few places.

Ditto thats why I said 12-18k salary is a joke.... the house prices imo in London are incredibly insane, a recent study said in London only if 2 people are paying for a morgage (couple) or someone on 35k a year can afford a house in london.

Even a 2-3 wooden bedroom place in my area cost £200-250k.....

Think I need to pack bag too :p

Just to show the differences outside of the windows world , I have a mate running a HPUX support company in the Midlands who is desperate for people with even a basic grasp of HPUX ( OS and hardware ), he is offering a minimum of £30k + standby and car allowance and just cannot get staff

Hu, that sounds interesting. When I was looking for HP-UX jobs down south (Brighton, Burges Hill, Haywards Heath) I couldn't find anything (I have a years experence working as a HP-UX bod for HPO/HPMSC).

Whereabouts in the midlands?

I finnished my degree (Computer Networks for Business (inc CCNA)) last Wednesday, started my training for HP OpenView on Monday, doing certification for Network Node Manager, Operations for Windows, and Operations for UNIX (Horrid peice of software thats in desperate need of a Re-write).

It quite good and interesting, though the drop out rate is Horrendous, to get on this far has been quite a challenge, with apitude tests, personality tests etc.

OpenView is quite a good thing to get into though - HP's sftware divison tripled or something last year, and its doing quite well this year. Network Node Manager 8 is going to be awesome!

what quals/exp?

I have a Computer science degree behind me - just finishing my project this summer.

I also have a years experience working in a school during my placement year, as an ICT technician.

This experience + degree probably got me the job!
