How to get mashed screw out (fragile!)

I've read this thread as I was having the same problem with the OP but with a 3D-printed AllPixel case where a screw got stuck. The flat-headed screwdriver trick as suggested by a few of you worked for me :-) So thanks to you all.

You usually end up with this problem with Philips screwdrivers with too sharp a point. The point holds the driver off the bottom of the screw 'cross', and in turn it prevents it locating in the cross of the head properly.

Usually caused by people not knowing that Philips and Pozidrive are not the same thing. They are different shapes, with different fixings requiring different tools. If you use the wrong tool you'll knacker the fixing.

And then there's JIS as well, which looks close enough to a Philips but will laugh at you and become a mangled mess if it's even slightly stuck and you try using a Philips on it.

Surprised GD didn't recommend an impact driver :p

As stated above, the wrong choice of bit is usually the death of a screw-head, good ressult op.

I've used torx bits in chewed fastener heads before and also what the op used, filing a driver head to get better purchase.

Interesting, not heard of that one before which is I probably should have considering the amount of work I've done on Japanese cars.

Learn something new everyday and I have an excuse to go tool shopping as bonus.
