How to get my forum "out there"

Its true. People use those services now to communicate instead of forums. Only big forums like ocuk survive because its a business, not just a forum someone started with 0 knowledge on what to do with it.

Good luck.

I'm not the only one who dislikes facebook. A lot of the more mature members don't want to be on the same website as their teenage daughters. Maybe that's your thing, but in our club and my experience of the martial arts guys. We're not into that sort of thing. Facebook may be for you, not for me unfortunately.

With regards to your quip about zero knowledge. I got it setup and have a few members so far. Seems to be going pretty well as for the extension onto the main website which has had a fair few thousand hits and attracted over 6 new members in the last 6 months to the club. So I wouldn't go as far as saying zero knowledge.

However, thank you very much for your kind words of wisdom.

Have a look at those, but phpbb3 as always been useless with security/spam.

Should use SMF/MyBB.
Not true.

phpBB3 had a paid security audit during development and hasn't had any security issues since it came out and currently has no known ones either.

Spam (which is a separate thing completely to security) is an issue on every board software out there. phpBB3 has, at various version stages, added more options to combat that. Recently all of the captcha type squiggly letters have been beaten by spambots. phpBB3 has a built in Q&A type captcha which is extremely effective in stopping automated registrations. I see maybe one a month if I'm unlucky and that'll be a human spammer registering. All bots gets stopped with ease.

Hey, don't take it so personally. If you want your forum to be for 10 members, then thats fine.

I suggest looking into seo, ad words and posting on other forums like yours but don't spam your link when you first sign up. Build a relationship with the members and share your knowledge on judo... then hit them with your forum link.

You'll probably need to pay someone to design a banner. Check of digitalpost.com.

Thanks' for the re assurance Kevin. Your word is very much respected by myself and you seem to be a wealth of knowledge when it comes to this.

I've had 53 spam bots denied on my forum today. Using vb software.

Is your forum just for members of your club or do you want it buzzing?

looks like you allready have some spam in new members

afganistan on my site lol... I get like 20new members everyday... Email confirmation sorted that! But they still register-stay inactive and go to bin i 20days :D

We rarely get spam posts at my vB forums (I'm currently running two seperate boards). Maybe just half a dozen a year.

We seem to get the occasional spam sign-up, which is impressive given our custom registration form - but they don't post, so if anything they just help increase our overall member count. :D

100,000 members
active members 57

Doesn't look good. lol.

Well I've now took into account the spam I would probably have gotten if I never took counter measures to prevent it. I enabled admin confirmation by email so I can check the origin of the I.P that's signing up. Anything from the culprit countries will be stopped.

I've also added a Q&A as the sign up question as I've been told this has been cracked recently.

So I don't think I'll get anymore spam now.

A lot of you seem to think VB is far superior and only it can fight off spam. So far PHPBB3 seems to look good to me, and is doing everything I need it too.

Kevin Clark on here was the one who actually decided to help me rather than hurling unhelpful comments "get VB, phpbb3 is ****" how constructive

So anyway, thanks very much Kevin. You helped me a lot and it's very much appreciated.

Ahh, hey Stulid. Didn't know you came in here. Once I get enough active members that I know I can make them dons. That might prove more difficult than you think. None of them are really tech savvy.

Drop me an email (Link under my sig) and I will take a look at your forum. Been doing a few myself (PHPBB3) but never got round to finishing them with work, family, time etc...

Actually there are quite a few useful tips in this thread if you're prepared to take some constructive critisism. But apparantly you can't.

After spending hours on researching and creating a phpbb3 forum... the only criticism I saw was, "you should have used Vbulletin." So please tell me how that is constructive, from your part?

Any other comments that were actually constructive I did take on board and thanked the people. Unfortunately you were not one of them.

/\ Agree. PHPBB is horrible. Both of those suggestions are better options. Although obviously vB/IPB are the best if you don't mind paying.

SMF+Tiny portal is a winning combo for a free forum.

So other than banging on about how brilliant your forum is at fighting spam and all the members you have, while at the same time telling me how rubbish my choices were. What did you actually contribute to this thread? That's right... Nothing!

I really wish people like you who have nothing constructive to say would post in another topic.

Like I said, thank you to all the people who did actually bother to post constructive critisism. It was very much appreciated.
