How to get Vista SP1 now!

Anyone know what drivers cause the sp1 installation to not finish installing?

Not sure about what drivers but it appears that KB937287 can cause the looping updates problem. This update has to be installed before SP1 and is being released prior to SP1 general release. I already had a friends computer back this morning that could not finish the update and he had not even heard of SP1, let alone try and install it. I did a system restore from the Vista install disk which recovered it and then installed SP1 as above. Its installed and is working fine. If you google KB937287 you will see it is causing problems.

well, mine installed fine. dont know what all this stuff is about - rebooting a lot i mean. when i came back to the PC this morning i forgot that i had disabled auto reboot so had the popup prompting me to reboot. it rebooted, installed step1, rebooted, went through 2-3 and straight to windows. 2 reboots aint a big deal :)

now, can anyone tell me what the command is to remove the backups created to uninstall SP1? i want to save the space - and have my own image of the PC pre SP! anyway

Just got round to installing SP1 and file copying is much improved. I'd say it's actually the best now that it has ever been in Windows. Progress bar is very very smooth and precise as is the "estimated time remaining". Network copying is very quick and responsive. Local copies are exceptionally fast. Well done Microsoft! :)

i wouldnt go that far with those faults - let's be honest, they shouldnt have been in the RTM of vista to begin with. thankfully they are gone now :)

I just noticed this myself when copying from another hdd, vista is definitely a more pleasurable experience now.

Many thanks "the.m"! Just updated my notebook Vista Premium - I clicked for several updates and then it installed sp 1. Now showing as 6.0.6001.18000
Thanks again for the posting.

PS it's also updated my "other" vista on my main puter!

Does your vista need to be activated for the registry to work?

It worked on my laptop but just tried it on my desktop and it won't pick up the SP1 update.

Just installed on my shuttle but had to reinstall my sound card driver as all my sound had gone mad, i had the sound up mid way and got a load of white noise made me jump i can tell you.

creative X-fi music in case you wanted to know

I installed with a torrent when it came out, but i haven't got any windows updates for 3 weeks now, is that normal and i just have to wait or should i roll back to non-sp1 and wait for official release?

So what happens when sp1 gets released to everyone but some already have it installed?

Will it reinstall it or just not appear on updates?

What is the not being able to boot thing about, should I be aware of this?

Just to add... I bought OEM Vista the other week and installed it. Although it looked decent, the (lack of) performance totally put me off. Back to my XP/Fedora 8 dual boot I went.

Today, decided to give it another try and after seeing this thread I installed SP1. WOW! It's now as fast as XP (if not faster!), silky smooth, and is just a pleasure to use. And that's coming from a die-hard Linux fanboy (which I still am and always will be)!!

Vista Ultimate 64 bit is getting wiped from this drive tonight. Why? So I can format my XP hdd (500GB Seagate Barracuda 7,200rpm 32MB cache) and migrate to Vista permanently. It's THAT good. Frankly I'm (pleasantly) amazed. Good job MS!

Edited to tidy up the wording and add this:

I hvae had vista sp1 on a dvd in both 32 and 64 bit forms rtm version for a week now as a mate gave me access temporarily to his technet so got it from there! - Made great difference to file transfer - it's great but I've liked vista since it came out tbh!
