How to get Windows 8 like Windows 7 please?

Assuming you have 8.1 installed, open the taskbar properties. From there you will find options to do the following:

Boot to desktop and not start screen
Opening the start screen will default to apps first rather than the tiles interfact
You can also select to order the apps by desktop apps first, not ModernUI apps.

This (functionality wise) restores most of the Start menu, most noticeably missing most frequent applications (although I think you can sort them by most used).

If you *really* want a classic start menu, then you can pick from a few alternatives - one such example is Start8. But there's quite a few, so you may want to try a few out to see what suites you best.

Yep something like Classic Shell is your best bet, free and quick,

This is basically the most asked question on this forum and on the Internet about Windows 8...surely we should either be searching to find this out, or have a sticky already? :D

There was a thread on another forum that had a huge list, but even Wikipedia has a good list: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Start_Menu_replacements_for_Windows_8

Another vote for Classic Shell here. Powerful with tons of options, but luckily it isn't at all confusing.

Upgrade to 8.1 OP, it gives the option to boot to desktop: http://www.pcworld.com/article/2043243/how-to-boot-to-desktop-mode-in-windows-8-1.html

If you want to start menu however, you will need to install 3rd party software.

Classicshell seems to be the most recommended if you want free. When I last tried it back during the release of 8 I didn't like the look of it and it didn't feel right, so I went to try some paid options. This may have changed now however, it's been about a year and a half since it's been out.

StartIsBack and Start8 are the two most popular paid ones. From my experience, both were very similiar in terms of features, so I went with the one that was cheaper. Both also have a 30 day trial as well, which is more than enough time to play around with.

Thanks guys, I used startisback so far so good. One thing how do I make the pc keep what windows are open and in same position on boot up after I shut down?

Also how best do you guys keep your bookmarks organised?

Its a bit new and daunting so far, bit frustrating but its new so I expected that.

Now I just need to know how to transfer ALL my stuff onto the 2TB hard drive I have, so just a full copy of my old pc onto the portable hard drive. I have files here there and everywhere and on the desktop too so just want to transfer as is, is that possible?
