I have Vista Home Premium X32 bit and want to get it to X64 bit to increase my RAM.

The OS came installed with the PC when I bought it in September 2007.

Is there any way at all to make my OS to X64 bit? (Preferably without having to get Windows 7).

So I can't just buy Windows Vista X64 bit disk? I would need to get Windows 7 X64 bit am I right?

So if I bought a X64 bit installation disk then it would work?

yeah that should work but you would have to register with microsoft to get the 64 bit disk.
you may want to remove that link before a mod comes along :)

Aye, as chips says - you will need to buy a new OS to get 64 bit. You could buy 64 bit Vista, but I would strongly suggest Windows 7 64 Bit if you are going to spend the money.

As for why you have to pay - as the OS came with your computer then it is an OEM version. These versions are sold either as 64bit or 32bit. However, if you bought a retail version of Windows Vista you could contact Microsoft and get them to send you a 64 bit version for free.

It may be worth calling up Microsoft and see if they can give you a discount to buy a 64 bit Vista if you relinquish your current key. Its a long shot, but it may be worth a go.

Edit: As for the link, it would work (you will need to contact MS to get the 64bit disk - so it won't be very fast) but I would remove the link ASAP as it is against forum rules.

I think your key is for Windows Vista Home Premium. Nothing to do with 32/64bit. Borrow a 64bit disc and install it using your key.

I haven't got a key.

The OS came installed on the PC when I bought it. :(

As it came with your PC then it is an OEM version of windows. The PC maker is legally required to put a Windows product sticker on your machine somewhere. This sticker will have your full product key on it.

This is the free way of doing it.

Your Vista key is valid for 32 and 64 bit, so if you can find someone with a 64 bit copy you can use your key on that.

Or if you want to spend money then buy W7 as it is a superior OS.

Either way you will have to reinstall

Oh yes, well spotted! :)

So, with this, I can request for Microsoft to send me a X64 bit disk?

On second thoughts, you may want to get into contact with your PC maker first. Is it Dell, HP, Pakard Bell or something?

I have heard many people have had a chat with Dell CS and get sent out the 64 bit version of the same OS free of charge.

Contacting microsoft would be a good fall-back position if your PC maker can't help.

With this link, is it possible to get Microsoft to send me a X64 bit disk using the product key on my CPU?

That's for the retail version, you have the OEM version.

My PC maker is MESH. Do you think that they would be happy to send me a X64 bit version? Don't forget that I bought this PC from them over 2 years ago...
