I'm looking to use my computer hooked up to a TV for a house party. I dislike the windows login screen for windows 7 and was wondering if there is anyway to have visualisations for winamp or whatever running but password protected to stop curious people wandering into my files.

Is there anyway to do this? Even better would be to allow people to use certain programs but not main access.

What's wrong with a new user? Set them as a normal user and lock the account down to certain programs only and they won't be able to get to your files either.

Can I allow access to any a few programs not windows as a whole?

You could just unplug the keyboard and mouse. Once you have a playlist lined up or whatever, you shouldn't need to mess with it. It's a party, no one will care about your PC.

Short term its no issue because I am there most of the time, but I don't want to appear like a begrudger not letting people use it when I am not there because I value my privacy.

If I could set it up so a secondary account would have internet access as well as maybe winamp and spotify, thatwould be great.

It depends how anal about it you want to be. I'd go with the second user account and maybe also unplug the keyboard and mouse for the duration of the party as well.

As for keeping your stuff private in general, without encryption it would only take someone who knows a bit about computers a few minutes to access your files.

What method would you recommend? At the moment I store all my private files using Truecrypt in a protected file. Find it pretty slow though to be honest. Is there anyway to truecrypt my user account?

thanks

A Standard Account shouldn't be able to get past NTFS permissions, assuming the OP has even set any. The OP might notice someone playing around in the Security tab too! :p

Why not just encrypt your entire HDD? It much faster than mounting a separate volume. If it is a multi-user PC, you can just use NTFS permissions on directories you don't want other users snooping in on [NTFS permissions should be automatically set on your User profile.]

just stream your pron from now on instead of keeping it saved to your machine ;)

Or to make this so much easier, hook up the speakers and forget about a telly. Again, no one will care about the computer at a party.
