How to improve my memory?

For short term things such as exams, I have no problems remembering the subject, but 5 months after the exam and I have absolutely NO idea about any of it. Are there any techniques to find out how my brain works and how I can put things in my long term memory or is it just a case of constantly looking over things?

memorise a sequence of cards every morning. start with a number of cards that you can ONLY JUST remember (for the whole day) and then when this number becomes easy, up it a bit.

tried and tested method, with startling results. wish i had the will power :(

Dunno if there's any actual science behind it - but playing the Brain Training game on my Nintendo DS everyday certainly made me feel sharper.

Probably just improving your capability of that particular game, I doubt it will have any significant effect on remembering the laws of thermodynamics over the course of 5 months for example.

Method of loci is an excellent technique for improving short-term memory. If you keep it in your mind enough, I imagine it will become long-term.

Whats that brain training game for nintendo DS or Wii thats been advertised recently? Can you get it on pc?

You know its getting bad when you wash your hair 3 times because you forget if you have or not. Or you check whether you have locked the door 3 times

:o

Im on total detox for the next 2 weeks

Personally, I find that images or drawing stuff helps me both learn and memorise things.

Like take for example, a large book with lots of text. If I read through it, I will probably remember 5 % at most. But if I read a page or a chapter and then try to convert what I've understood into a mindmap then its usually with me for good. (think big circle, lots of other things coming out of it). If you do it in such a way that you break it down and thereby simplify it you should have no problem remembering the simplified structure in your head and the rest will come.

Oh and I don't think anyone can remember things long-term if they don't 'freshen up' on them every now and then so I wouldn't be surprised if you're not remembering this stuff 5 months on.

if you're forgetting the subject after 5 months, just look over it every 3 months or so...

if they're school exams you're talking about, just do a past paper, they're good for jogging the memory ;)
