Seems like i can't install without a back up of the old hdd? I never knew this would be such an issue is there anyway to install mac os to new hdd without a back up copy?

Err if I recall correctly you might have to format the drive first. You should be able to access Disk Utility from the install screen.

As above , you can start Disk Utility from the setup screen to format your new drive , then just close Disk Utility after format which will take you back to the setup and your new drive should be listed as available for the install.

I do this on every new machine.

Never use the default install :p

Put CD in the drive and hold D to boot from the disk.

If the HDD is not in the list, then it's either dead or not connected properly.

if it doesnt show in disk utility then something is up with it

are you certain it was the old HDD that died ? could be something up with the connectors on the logic board if the new one isnt working too ?
