How to install windows onto an SSD ?

Hi

I have Windows 8.1 loaded onto a USB disk as a boot drive and was just about to install it on my new Samsung SSD 840 drive but when i try and choose it as the destination drive for windows i get a message appear saying.

"Windows cannot be installed on this disk. This computers hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disks controller is enabled in the computers BIOS menu"

I've no idea what this means or what to do, anyone able to help ?

I have no other hard drivers plugged in btw (if thats relevant ?)

Check AHCI is enabled in the BIOS.

could you be a bit more specific as to where id find this option ? I've never used the BIOS, it's a bit daunting !

I think my motherboard is a Gigabyte model from about 3 years ago

What model of Gigabyte board is it? Try hitting the Del button when the computer starts to enter the BIOS, then look for 'Integrated Peripherals' and check the SATA mode is set to AHCI.

I've found the Integrated Peripherals section but see no mention of AHCI whatsoever

Should be in SATA modes, it may be set to IDE.

Although most boards I've seen from that era were AHCI by default.

Look in Integrated Peripherals and then scroll down to PCH SATA Control Mode and select AHCI. And make sur your hdd is not connected when you start the installation.

It has all this info in your manual.
