Hi peeps!

I'll be the 1st to admit that i'm a complete n00b when it comes to anything network related, but a friend of mine has asked me if i can help her regarding this issue. She wants to shut off her sons internet connection during certain periods of the night ie between 11:00pm and 7:00am.

Is there any perticular way she can do this without the son being able to undo it or find a work around?

Depending on the router, there may be Parental Controls that allow wireless to turn off at certain times, or maybe even restrict access based on MAC address.

A more advanced router like an Asus N56u or something would allow it, but you would need a bit of knowledge on setting it up.

What router does your friend use....?

I have a VM Superhub and you can restrict access by MAC ID to certain times of the day and this is how I controlled my son.

That was until he workout a way to change the MAC address on his laptop to one that was not restricted.

Thanks for the input, surely you can configure the router as to not allow any other MAC address to connect to the router? I seem to remember that setting when i was configuring my own Netgear one?

Indeed, he just used the MAC Address of one of my devices, I always thought MAC addresses were unique but not so.

So I have MAC filtering on and restricted his devices, so after 9pm he lost internet......but he just changed his devices MAC Address to the same as my laptop.

Mac addresses are unique. Changing it to the same as your laptop, I'm surprised there hasn't been connection issues. The mac table will be royally confused.

Honestly, I have no idea this is what he did he showed me as I did not believe him, I foolishly thought MAC ID's were unique and factory fixed, how naive I am.

I am sure the MAC table was confused, we have now had a little chat and set rules.

Before all this he also acquired an old router and attached it to my main computer, hiding the router down the back of the desk, well out of site. I only realised when I 'happened' to run a SSID scan and found this unknown strong wireless network in my house.

Anyway purpose of saying all this is, unless you are an expert, a good old fashioned talk and rules set is probably the safest route.

Sounds as though your son is quite switched on with all of those workarounds :p

Yes, it is easy to copy and spoof mac addresses, mac auth is a nearly pointless exercise if the end user understands networking. :)

Most routers we sell have some form of parental control on them or even guest networks which you can control as well. What router are you using. Also how is he connecting. via wifi or LAN.
