hi guys, i dont know if this has been mentioned before, but im running 2 x150gb rators in raid 0,whats the easist way to back up files etc, without having to reinstall, would getting an external hard drive, work for backing up, or would i have to run raid 1,as i really dont wanna have to reinstall windows again  ????

ghost? acronis trueimage?

though i found out that if you have an activated version of vista, after ghosting it will require re-activation *shakes fist at MS*

NO WAY  really? was this restored to the same hardware & it still needed reactivating?

as said acronis tureimage/norton ghost should do the trick if you can live with an "image"

If you want direct copy backup, ie so you can copy the files across if you delete one, you just need a drive of 300+GB which can be internal or external

I'm also using RAID 0, I used to use Acronis True Image when I had Windows XP to back everything up. I don't know if you've got Vista, but there's some nifty backup tools built in with it and I just use those now.

I backup to an external disk.

They both create an image and both let you acess single files, Ghost uses its own Explorer, and Acronis mounts the image as a virtual drive.

Anyway to the OP, Externals convenient but slow whether on usb2 or Firewire400, if poss i'd go for an external sata but thats only any good if your board supports it.

Or you could always add an extra drive inside the case - space permitting of course, as said the raid isnt an issue, i also run a raid0 setup with a pair of raptors on an Intel Matrix raid, 1 XP 1 Vista, have to say for me Acronis gets the vote.

Righto, well tbh i've never had one of those boards so E@OE :)

Option 1, Seems your board has esata - so an external housing with esata could be handy.

Option 2, Internal HDD - Be it sata or ide matters little (your board has both) basically you dont add it to the raid set, dont fiddle with the raid settings at all just wait for windows to pop up then nip into System management and partition/format said drive.

Worst case scenario is the mobo may try to boot from the new hdd, that's where you'd need to pop into the bios and make sure it's not using the newly added drive as the 1st drive in the boot sequence -but most likely only if it's ide this will happen.

yeah but thats no good if there isnt any access to ghost/acronis :)

Of course, if you actually create the rescue/boot CD at install time as Acronis asks you to do, you will always have "access" to it, regardless of whether you've got a working windows installation or not. In any case, it's a doddle to reinstall acronis after you've installed windows, and then to mount your old backup image. :-)
