How to make my pc quieter

I recently purchased a cm storm scout case and I have fitted it with a H50 with the stock fan and a fan that came with the case, my pc also has the standard front 140mm fan and a xigmatek XLF 140mm fan, these provide fantastic temps over my old case and for the speeds I'm clocking at I can't sacrifice too much airflow. The problem is they make too much noise and get very frustrating if I don't have any music on at the time. Any suggestions welcome :)

Slow down the fans.

Buy better fans.

Both.

Get a fan controller and slow the fans down for idle use and ramp them back up for heavy usage. Also look at reducing the amount of heat produced by your PC at idle by downclocking or reducing voltages where appropriate.

You may have one or two fans providing most of the noise. Start by working out which fan is the loudest by isolating each in turn and detecting noise difference. Slow, replace or rubber mount that fan to reduce it's impact on the whole system.

It can take a lot of time, effort and cash to reduce the noise a PC makes.

What sort of noise are we talking anyway? A low whoosing noise or a noise you can hear in the next room?

At night you can hear it through a thick wall around 8 metres away and it's more of a loud drone. Which fan controller/fans would you recommend??

if the fans are plugged into mobo 3 pin fan headers you should be able to set the bios to a silent/pwm mode. I used to do this before i water cooled, that way the fans only sped up when the pc was under load. Other than that get a fan controller. I have a scythe kaze master, cannot fault it. Depending on what case you have will also play a part in what fan controller matches.

The power supply fan can also make a significant contribution to noise. If you told us the make & model of yours, the rest of us should tell if it is noisy & recommend an alternative.

most of my fans have molex connections, so I can't plug them into the motherboard but I imagine I could either make or buy a converter to 3 pin for the fans, also I'm a bit strapped for cash and the fan controller seems a tad over my budget do you know if there is one with good reviews for around 20?

Indeed. Slowing down Molex powered fans can be difficult. Fan controllers seldom work with molex powered fans as they usually work off 3 pin fan headers. If you 7v mod the fans you will lose airflow and be unable to switch back to 12v without modding the wiring back.

I'd go with the molex to fan header mod. You can get cheap fan controllers for less than a tenner. I got one on a popular auction site for about £5 last year. It controls 4 fans and fits in a floppy bay. It's not bling, one of the knobs us stiff but it works.

Ok, thanks I guess I'm going too be trawling through the bay for a few hours now but it should be worth it in the end, thanks everyone who helped :D
