Hi all

I've currently got a cooler master 650w psu in my pc but its running really loud, always has done. is there anything i can do to quieten it down (in settings etc?). I'm mainly asking because i'm going to upgrade my pc after xmas but dont want to go an buy yet another psu just to have it as loud!

Cheers

Welcome to the forums. As far as I'm aware the only thing you could do is to replace the fan in the PSU and I really would not recommend doing that, the very fact you are asking about how to quieten the PSU suggests to me that you probably don't have the necessary skill at the moment and since PSUs can retail a lethal amount of volts for a very long time I certainly wouldn't be attempting it. :)

You could however try getting a can of compressed air and giving the PSU a quick blow with that to see if that clears any blockages.

As semi suggests I would leave the PSU - it also voids warranty opening it up. Periodically I vacuum my hardware with the dyson. I use the soft ended bit and make sure I'm very careful - it cleans the PSU quite nicely through the grill etc.

There was a thread on here ages ago with a guy who was determined to open up his PSU to change some bits round. We were all like "Don't do it! You'll electrocute yourself!" and he was like "Don't worry, I know what I'm doing, how hard can it be,..." etc...

Didn't hear from him again :D

Get a quieter PSU (Corsair or Seasonic spring to mind) and sell your old one on fleabay

so which one's would u suggest, i need as quiet as possible. doesnt really need to be stupidly powerful either as i only use photoshop, dreamweaver and football manager on it!

Corsair 520W or Seasonic 500W. A powerful PSU will probably be quieter than a lower power PSU on a low power rig, as it is at a low relative load. I have a seasonic PSU and it is the quietest component with a fan tbh.
