How to make tea (properly)

Ask relatives or friends for funky ones for christmas. It's an idea for them, and laughs at what crazy ones you recieve for you! :D

put teabag in mug.
pour boiling water in mug.
leave for 5 mins (less if you're a *****)
remove teabag.
add copious amounts of concentrated lemon juice.
allow to cool for ages.
drink.

or if you're english, stick a bag of tetleys in a mug with some milk and drink some dishwashater

Milk before the Tea with a Teapot. Pouring cold milk into hot tea rather than vice versa just seems wrong to me.

Milk after the Tea without a Teapot. Allowing the tea to brew in mug means you have no choice really, brewing the tea with milk in it just doesnt work well at all I find.

My folks swear that 'Milk before tea' tastes better. In a china cup, non of this mug business.

4. Pour in the water as soon as it boils, taking the pot to the kettle so the water doesn't have a chance to cool down.

Totally disagree with this, you end up with a distinct bitter taste as the leaves get scolded by the boiling water, I usually give it a minute or so to cool down once poured into the cup before I put my bag in. maybe it's just in my head but I reckon it tastes much better that way.

Why have you quoted me there?

You wouldn't put a teapot cosey on a kettle.

You make your tea all in one, none of this fancy teapot and kettle thing! Unless of course you are using the kettle to pre boil the water for when you pour the first part out, but even then you still have the teapot on the fire (see my first post on the subject, obviously you don't do it for the weak **** we make in the UK).;)

I think that's why the Arabs pour the first "boil" away, it removes all the tannings and nasty stuff that comes out the tea first leaving the second "boil" much sweeter (even without sugar). May be worth a try even if making english tea?

Heh, now I feel like less of a ***** for re-using teabags :D

Interesting! I might have a go at that one day.

Be warned however that that teapot will literally be half filled with tea leaves (EDIT: thinking about it it ws around 2-3 handfulls ish I IIRC), probably equivilent to about 50 teabags for about 8 shot sized glasses of tea.:p (And around 4-5 tablespoons of sugar, ie LOADS!)

I can only assume tea is very cheap (seems to come in bags about the size of 2-3 flour bags) or a cup of tea would be very expensive there!

It is far nicer than English tea IMO, however probably only for the sweet tooth, the mint tea is sublime when made this way.:)

I really want to try it myself sometime too.

EDIT: Almost exactly like this http://www.recipezaar.com/Moroccan-Mint-Tea-55799

Although I am sure the bloke definately poured the first few minutes of tea water away (which may be what one of the comments to the right alluded to). The 10 sprigs and 3 teaspoons of tea leaves sounds about right for a couple of handfuls of dried tea.

Just a quick post to say thanks for all the replies. I'm going to pop out either tomorrow night or Saturday to buy what I need and lots of different types of tea and see how I get on. Will report back on how I find them :) thanks again

No no.

PG Tips pure tea granules.

One teaspoon in mug of boiling water, stir until the echo of the spoon hollows out, pour in the amount of milk you like, add sugar if needed and enjoy a superb tasting tea, better than pyramid bags.

I've bought a selection of different loose tea, a teapot and a load of milk :p will give all the different "strategies" ago and report back on which work and which dont

One heaped teaspoon of tea into a strainer, place strainer over mug.
Carefully pour just boiled water over the leaves.
Allow to stand for aminute or two depending on how strong you like your tea.
Add milke, sugar, whiskey. Up to you really.

This method does away with the need for a pot.
