How to organize contacts on Android

I just got my first Android phone, and my contacts list is a mess! It's syncing with Google Mail, Google+, Skype, and most of those contacts don't have phone numbers so I have to create a new contact to give everybody a number too! If I have people on multiple services they show up 2-3 times in my contacts list, which is incredibly annoying.

I'd like to have all my contacts on the cloud, so I can see them whatever device I use, but I'm lost on how to organize them properly. Any advice appreciated.

In the People app, press the menu button and then 'contacts to display'

You can then choose what you want shown.

If you want to make sure each contact has the correct name and details the easiest way is to log into your Google account and sort it out from the Contacts section. Very very quick to do it with a proper mouse and keyboard lol

Ah I missed that section, that's going to help a lot, thanks.

You can also 'Link' contacts by Long Pressing a contact and select 'Link Contact' it'll then throw up a list of suggested contacts you can link to the original, or you can browse if it misses some!! :)

I've got Google, Yahoo, Outlook.com and Farcebook all syncing (though Farcebook is only Syncing contacts that match with the Google ones!)...

How do you have Facebook only sync with the contacts on your phone? Also where abouts do you 'long press' on a contact. I try thin on people on my N4 and long pressing on a contact does nothing

The way I've set it up is to not use the Sync feature in Facebook at all.

Go to the app settings in Facebook, then sync settings and remove Facebook data.

After that, grab Sync.ME and let it manage it. Facebook aren't playing nice with google and their Sync feature is crap now. This app sorted it out for me :)

There's three options in the 'Sync Contacts' (Other Settings at the Bottom of the Settings menu in Facebook) 'Sync All', 'Sync only with Contacts on Phone' and 'Sync None'... Though this might be a 'Facebook Inside Xperia' only thing!!...

Maybe they've taken the Long press out of the Contacts list in Jellybean!... or (again) it might be a Sony Xperia only thing!.. but I just 'Long Press' anywhere on the Contact name in the Menu List, or there is an option within each contact under Edit and scroll down to the bottom and it shows 'Linked Contacts' and a button!!..

As others have said, but to reiterate:

- https://www.google.com/contacts is the best way to manage them (you can also get to it via Gmail).
- Take care with Facebook contacts. When I got my first android phone (HTC Desire), it had Facebook contact syncing built in, with profile pictures etc. However, when I got a Galaxy Nexus the feature disappeared to my annoyance. I didn't realise it was something specific to Sense at the time. Now all my contacts have this 'HTC Facebook Data' crap in the "Notes" section.

The HTC stuff in the "Notes" section is for contact matching when you switch between HTC devices I think.

Stock android JB is the by far the worst operating system I've come across for managing contacts.

There's no way out of the box to link contact.

It will add everyone you've ever emailed from your gmail account as a contact, with no way to show only those with phone numbers.

Lolwut. There's a join/merge contact and a only display contacts with numbers setting.

On skinned android maybe. I used to have those options on sense.

I'm sitting here with jellybean in front of me. Absolutely no option to show contacts with numbers only, or to link contacts.

Motorola Defy - CM10

I swear on the edit contact screen, press the menu button and there's a join/merge option.

Also when on the contact list, press menu, contacts display, and tick "only contacts with numbers".

Must just be CM10 that sucks then.

Long press on a contact, on release just opens that contact.

/Off to look for a better rom.

I think the 'Long Press' is a Sony/Sony Ericsson only thing!!

It doesn't seem to work for anyone else!!...

But using the Menu key should work!! :)
