how to overclock ATI

It's been a few months since I had an ATI card, but from what I remember it was fairly straight forward.

Go to the ATI overdrive section in catalyst.
Click the padlock to open overclocking options.
Move the sliders to desired clockspeed.
Test for stability by running a GPU stress testing program such as furmark - keeping an eye on temps/potential artifacts.

Prob best not to advise "newer members" of gfx card clocking to use furmark...and for any one who says "i use it with no problems" keep your trolling to yourself the person is poping his o/c cherry :p

Ahh, now I understand!! :D

I never really thought about it like this, but yeah, you are right enough.

I've stopped using furmark, and instead just use normal gaming and maybe 3d mark vantage/06 to test my GPU overclocks.

Increase it in small increments or you could kill your card.

1-Increase 5-20 mhz
2-Run game/stress test for 10-15mins
3-Check temps.

If temps are good repeat step 1.

Good luck :D

p.s what card you got? I'm just about to start OCing my 4890 :)

Well these are the steps i followed to overclock my ATI 4850:

Unlock Overdrive in Catalyst.
Do a autofind of the highest speeds.
After Catalyst auto detects the highest speeds, reduce it by 5MHz.
Run 3DMark Vantage or preferably 3DMark06 (taxes the CPU and graphics card more) in loops.
If all looks fine along with the temps, keep the settings by creating a Catalyst profile.

I really rate Furmark; I like to think an overclock is stable after 30 minutes of furmark as there do not seem to be any temp increases after about 5 minutes. Saying its dangerous is like saying you can't advocate prime torture test for CPU overclocking. If its stable its stable. If not its best knowing about it rather than causing problems down the line after a dodgy OC that you think is ok.

Another test is ATI tool; I don't have much experience of this though.

No one has mentioned turning up the fan speed on your card when overclocking and as DB says keep a close eye on temps. You can get a rough idea of the normal limits from other posters.

I use rivatuner for my nvidia card and I'm sure it does ATI too. I usually run a heavy underclock when not playing games.
