Selling off parts to old computer and need to post a cpu which is attached to heatsink and fan. Whats the best way to protect the pins? I was thinking to bubble wrap the whole thing (cpu, heatsink & fan) together a few times then put in a box, but will the bubble wrap cause static issues?

kinda off-topic but related to cpu's at the same time :D

CPU is attached to heatsink and fan

First of you wanna make sure you remove the CPU from the HS! Then clean both down getting rid of old thermal paste. Package them separately using the CPU package the cpu came in (if you still have it). There will be static in bubble rap but static will only harm the CPU not the heatsink, aslong as the CPU is protected then you will be ok.

Ditto , you must remove the heatsink from the cpu before posting.

In transit the weight of the heatsink will crush the cpu pins ( the pins will perforate the bubble wrap )

Just sit the cpu , pin down ,on some foam with foam on top and put in an small box ( jewellry / earing box ).

I've done it a few times on a "certain auction site " with no prob's.

Cheers,

Mark

Ditto x10 what's been said above. Very delicate part, CPU's. You can package how it comes OEM style, i.e. inside a small box, in-between 2 square (shape & size of CPU) sponges. For extra security wrap the box around with bubble wrapping. As for heatsink, just make sure the bottom is covered and the fan protected from anything crashing it. Boxes are better for the job :)

Thanks a lot for the advice everyone. Thought i could get away with just posting the lot together  , good job i made this thread then eh.

i haven't tried yet, but im sure it shouldn't be too hard to separate the heatsink and cpu, cpu's only been attached to it for a short time so hopefully the thermal hasen't set like stone or anything lol.

im still stuck on the packaging though, i now know how to package it, but where do i get suitable packaging from, like small pieces of foam and a small box so the cpu doesn't move around too much etc?

Cut some small pieces of kitchen sponge to size and you must be able to find a small box somewhere ( large matchbox ? )

Recycling m8, look around the house u'll b suprised with what you can find and use (unless you're a business & want to make an impression). Other than that, Post Office™ carry some good cheap supplies :D
