How to password a folder?

I've got a folder of stuff that I'd like to keep, ahem, secret. Nothing illegal or anything, just I don't want anyone to see it.

How do I password an individual folder? In Windows XP.

I'm not sure you can without 3rd party software.

Can you not password the files. i.e. if there are excel files or something like that.

I'm not sure you can do the folder itself

Right-click->Properties->Security tab. Remove all other user accounts except for your own.

Correct. But everyone these days makes their own seperate accounts for each user of the PC. Windows encourages it so much that even computer illiterate families have a user account for each person.

I would not relie on XP's security to hide your sensitive data!! Even a script kiddie can bypass this with complete ease.

Personally I just RAR up my sensitive data with a strong password protected RAR.

You win sir! Except that I used winzip instead.

I'm not protecting these files against hackers, just snooping people on my bit of the puter. Would cause much embarrassment if the files were discovered.

Send to a zipped folder, then click File -> Add a Password.

You'll then have to enter the password when you try opening the files. Because it is in a zipped folder, you can still see the files normally, you just need a password to read/write/execute.

exactly what i do and it works great! just remember to log out when you not using the pc! and set your screensaver to return to login screen.

That's what I'm attempting to do. This is just extra-sensitive so I can't even run the risk of someone finding it. It would cause more than mild ****-taking.

For total security, rename the zip to a .dll file, & drop it into System32

You could also simply move the folder itself into there, & turn on the silly little no meddling messages- No-one will ever find it there
