how to play .sub files on osx?

got a movie with .sub file for subtitles, cant seem to find any player that uses it, it seems to autoload mplayer but it crashes on load.
anyone know how i can get it to work?

Use VLC and under Video, go to "subtitle track" and select it.

Make sure .sub is with the .avi files...
