How to protect myself from pickpockets?

Split your cash/phone up in your front jeans pockets and keep your eyes open, Rome wasn't too bad in comparison to Prague/Barcelona. Main thing is to keep tight hold of bags/pockets on the subway..

Edit: Don't carry all your cash around with you as well, keep some in the hotel. I think if the situation is right, anyone, no matter how much you think you're aware and ready and can get done.

You could try the same method that ancient Romans used to protect their valuables - a forearm purse. It requires more skill to steal from it undetected than it does to steal something from a pocket undetected.

i have seen loads of women with little bells on their purses,i asked one the other day in work why you got them on and she said if somebody attempts to steal her purse she will hear it.So attaching little bells to all your wallet will stop them pick pockets,or you will just hear the sound of bells ringing then slowly getting quieter in the distance

I was in Tenerife a few weeks a go and used to only carry my Card and around 50 euros in cash around with me and these went in either a zipped/button pocket on my shorts or on the inside pocket of my swim shorts. My phone was in my pocket and my hands were pretty much always in my pocket with my phone. At one point I had about 4 lucky lucky men walk into me all at the same time and felt someones hand in my pocket but thankfully that pocket was empty.

Alternatively you could attach a klaxxon to your wallet that goes off every time the wallet moves.

Thanks for this.

Will be travelling myself from July with 1 bank card, and 2 pre-loaded cash cards just to be safe. Will be a case of taking one of the cards and a bit of cash, with cash back at my hotel/hostel.

*touches wood it doesn't happen* Can't imagine the depair when realising you've been pickpocketed in a foreign country.

I've got shorts with zip pockets that are around the knee area which I found to be useful. I also did the padlock on my backpack after catching someone trying to get into when in Barcelona.

Don't use back pockets or the pockets in a jacket, especially the low inner pockets in suit blazers. Only use front hand pockets on trousers or pockets in your jacket with a zip. Get in to the habit of checking your pockets, If someone bumps in to you, check your pockets. Always keep your wallet in the same pocket. If you are in crowded areas like tube platform then keep your hands in your pockets.

The main thing to do is to Stop letting the pick pockets know where your money is, Yes it is You that lets them know which pocket to pick.
It's called a "Tell" & pick pockets watch for it & once seen they then go & pick that pocket, They do not randomly stick there hands into peoples pockets.
You All keep touching the pocket where your money is to reassure yourself it's still there, You do this All the time not just once & don't even realise it.
Stop telling them where your money is & they will go elsewhere, Simple.

Get in to the habit of checking your pockets, If someone bumps in to you, check your pockets.
:p

My tips for Rome and Barcelona when I went are this:

* For a SLR buy a Go Pro Flipside which only opens on the back. Its then impossible for someone to open it.
* I keep My cards and the spending money in a safe in the hotel. Only take a days spending money with you. If your taking the misses put some in her Bra just in case.
* Use front pockets that seal ideally.
* Make sure mobile is insured and if it helps has tracking osftware installed to wipe the phone.
* Keep the camera hidden away if your not using it.
* Dont get distracted by beggars, street sellers and random people asking for directions. This is when they will strike as they can work in teams.
* Stay in well lit areas at night.

Thats all I can remember at the moment.

Tesla Coil

Build them in a circular perimeter around your structures, then wait for the enemy to approach and be burned to a crisp.
