Hi all! I know nothing about RAID setups at all but a friend asked me to post this question for his brother. He had 2 x 37gig raptors in a RAID 0 setup with all his profesional photography work stored on but his old socket A mobo has died. Apparently the old socket A mobos are abit expensive to get hold of and my mate who knows about as much as me(which is still more than his brother) recons he cant get into the hard drives on another mobo as it needs to be the same raid drivers etc. Im not sure what make the dead mobo is. Any advise would be very much appreciated. cheers.

Hmm, no backups I assume? I'm afraid I've got no sympathy if he hasn't backed anything up, especially if it's to do with his work.

I agree, but we all make mistakes (as far as mistakes go this is a big one)

Anyway, I would look out for a 2nd hand mobo with the same chipset or look for a compatible chipset.

What chipset does his mobo have?

Also, storing anything important on a RAID-0 array is rather silly in the first place!

If you have some Linux-fu, any version of Linux with the dmraid program will see the array so you can get your files off.

Thanks for the replys, seems hel have to find another mobo after all although i will tell him to check out RAID reconstructor. Im afraid i dont know enough about linux to go that way. cheers

what about

a RAID 10 - thats 1 + 0 with 4 x HDD's - I have had my raid go down twice (bloody CABLES) replaced the drive and cable - the system automatically rebuilt the RAID when the new drive was installed with NO loss of Data.

In previous posts people have said that a RAID 10 is a stupid idea - I dont get it!?!?!?!?

RAID 10 = striping and mirroring

Works for me.
