How to sell a game

Well thats a lie, i always install my own games on other computers for test purposes when building rigs etc.

And i have probably installed all my games 5+ times.

I know securom has a limit of 5 installs on seperate computers for some games.
Although ive never encountered this yet.

that'll be online activation if the computers aren't online it can't update the install limit. (which is why more games are saying they need an internet connection).

Yes, the game install limit depends totally on the game. I have a lot of games that you can install as many times as you want, but more modern ones tend to be limited to 5 or more through Securom or Games for Windows Live. If the game has been linked to your Steam account though, that means you can install it as many times as you want (depending on Games for Windows Live - Bioshock 2 for example has a 15 install limit.)

The key thing to remember here is that a game is only useful if you have both the software (ie the game itself) and the installation key.

Hi, i currently work for Game stores Ltd. I can say that you cannot sell on the majority of PC games due to the authentication key which is overwritten when the game is installed. Some games will allow for reinstillation to the same computer up to three times but that is dependant on each game.

to sum up you cannot sell on a PC game anymore as the authentication code gets deleted off of the disk making it unusable after first installation.

Also, as a side note, the place where you get your games is unlikely to take your PC games back once unsealed unless the game has a fault.

hope this helps.

Surely this post was a joke?:(

There are a few places online that sell keys, onlinekeystore is one that I saw mentioned on forums. I think this sort of thing will gain popularity because of things like Steam. Some people posted that they purchased keys & had no problems.
I have been away from PC gaming for a few years & wanted to get back into it but I was unaware of this restriction until I read up on it recently. I will just have to be careful when buying 2nd hand. The number of installations limitation is something I never heard of until now.

That's as far as I read before I thought this chappy doesn't have a clue about PC games.

I "highlighted" the bit you may want to re-think... Google it if you must.

That said I did read

I nearly ignored the post but I thought I would give benefit of the doubt :p

Just because Game can't train there staff very well doesn't mean you all have to lay into the guy..

Chances are this info is what was told to Akempster by his manager, If he doesn't know any better of course he's going to relay this info. jeez some people need to grow up...

Was thinking the exact same thing myself.

meh, jump on your high horses !!!!!

Maybe rather than telling people that he should use his own mind and think before he claims info like it is fact...

Its why joe bloggs ends up getting ripped off by because they presume the people working in shops like Game (ltd)... know what they are talking about and are not just having you on.

Thats life... false information from people in 'authority' becomes truth.

It is possible to sell on the Steam account, but only if its a person you know and trust. Nobody in there right mind would pay for a Steam account online (except hackers), because you can quite easily claim it stolen and get it back, leading to them proving you were breaching the EULA and banning the account. Other than that, games tied to steam accounts can't be resold.

Thanks for clearing that up, that explains why there are sites selling keys. I will have to be careful buying second hand games.

A good rofl from me. :D

Exactly the kind of thing I'd expect from a Game employee tbh..

Kind of surprised how people have jumped on some poor guy for trying to be helpful. Sure he was wrong but more than likely because that was what he's been simply told.

Not every person who works in an particular industry is going to know the low level stuff - especially when told by someone in authority. Hell, I work with web designers who don't know what a http referrer is...

I'm still not convinced he's not trolling.

I mean who says "I work for Games Stores Ltd"?

People would just say "I work for Game" or I work for "Gamestation" don't you think?
