How to set master and slaves?

I need to copy files and programs from my old IDE hard drive. I've got it plugged into my DS3 atm but it recognises it as Master 4. Master 3 is my 80GB SATA2 HD and Slave 5 is my 250GB SATA2 HD. How do I make my old hard drive a slave?

Change the jumper on the back of the HDD. However, you can only have one Master and one Slave on each IDE cable.

Why do you need it as slave? You can copy files no matter. If you mean you don't want it as a boot drive then you can set the hard disk priority and boot order to whichever SATA drive has windows.

I was told it needed to be a slave. Oh well, do I just use windows transfer wizard then?

Ok, i've got my old hard drive as a slave. Now if I want to transfer all my old files on to the new hard drives I should just be able to go into the HD on 'My Computer', but it says 'the disk in drive F is not formatted, do you want to format it now?'. Should I or will I lose my stuff on it?

Format will erase the disc. If it was yourboot disc before it should have a valid format, so this message shouldn't appear. Have you changed the OS?

Are you looking to copy an old active partition to a new drive ? If so you will need imaging software. Assuming the old drive was used with your current mobo.
If its just documents and mp3's copy and paste.
