How to speed Firefox up

That article is nearly three years old... tracemonkey is enabled by default for example.

Alternatively, download Firefox 7 alpha. Has memory improvements and boot up time reduction.

Firefox is already fast... but there's always room for improvement.
There was a small, noticeable difference in performance after making the adjustments.

As mentioned above, the 'hacks' mentioned are all designed for version 3. We're currently on version 5.
Also condifer the fact that there's likely a reason they aren't already enabled by default. Afterall if they only sped things up without having any adverse effects, do you think they would still keep things at the slow speeds?

Apologies for bump, didn't think this warranted a new thread. I am a big advocate of FF but it is fast becoming a nightmare to use. If I leave it running for a while - it can easily be using 300/400MB with just a few tabs open. Opening it can take forever and some times it opens two windows. The main reason I like FF are the addons/extensions but it's becoming annoying to use. Going to do a fresh W7 install but unsure whether to tweak FF or go to Chrome. Does Chrome have many decent extensions?

Firefox isn't good on a low spec machine. One tab open, only 2 plugins and using 400MB ram? If it wasn't for no script I'd have moved to something else ages ago.

At home fine, I have 12GB of ram to play with, but my windows box at work is pretty crap.

It isn't a low spec machine - well not for FF standards (3.2Ghz C2D & 4GB). I have around 5/6 plugins (NoScript, AdBlocker, dictionary and a few more that I can't remember). None strike me as that intensive but it eats through RAM surprisingly easily. I think I will look into some ways to maintain decent performance.

Latest build of FF 7.0a2 with 13 tabs open and several extensions, currently using 360mb having been open all day.

Latest build of Chrome 14 with the same tabs is using around 620mb.

I'd say FF7 starts up and finishes loading all those tabs maybe slightly faster than Chrome 14 on my system, though there really isn't much in it at all.

After reading this I d/l Aurora & have to say I really like what I see. Thanks for the heads up.

I don't think they have fixxed the memory problems. Mines still hitting 2gb memory easily, with only 8tabs open. while chrome is about 500mb.

There has to be an extension you're using that has a memory leak.

I don't see how else it could be possible to hit 2gb in FF7. I've had it open an entire day with more than twice as many tabs as you and I've never seen it go much over 400mb.
