Hey all!

Need a little advice on the best way to boost my preformance on my pc. Im running Windows 7 64-bit

I currently have;

  • Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (Clocked too 4.40GHz)
  • TeamGroup Elite 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel
  • Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM 1TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache
  • Gigabyte GeForce GTX 560Ti 1032MHz 1GB PCI-Express 3.0 HDMI

It run's pretty decent but i notice some lag during some games and boot ups now take a little longer with also some programs / games taking longer to load also. Im thinking of upgrading some of my components. I dont really think i need to upgrade my CPU or MOBO as im not an extreme gamer! But i do like to run smooth. Should i be looking at an SSD hard drive? better RAM? my graphics seems too be ok too i guess, But im sure theres better cards out there.

Some games i play are League Of Legends, Natural Selection 2, WoW Raiding,

Some suggestions would be great and some help or advice is appriciated!

Many thanks

Ste

That's rather strange as i have a lesser spec computer than you but my LoL runs @ 60FPS at highest graphics fine, Now that's confusing!

An SSD would certainly improve boot times.

If you feel like your performance is lacking in games then maybe a new graphics card?

What is your budget?

if your looking to upgrade first tihing i would go for it an ssd here is one i have and it works great boots in less than 25 seconds, all my programs nearly instantly load once i've logged in and in lol if you have fibre optic, you should pretty much be the first one loaded

otherwqise your components are ok although i would upgrade the g-card to either one of these

or

both of those should be able to handle most games on ultra, you could find cheaper cards but make sure they are atleast 2gb if you are looking for another 1gb is ok but 2gb makes such a difference

Would an AMD 7950 not be a better choice than a geforce 660 at that price point?

Although I would probably go for an SSD to act as a boot drive and for the games you play the most.

Start Menu > Type: msconfig > disable anything not needed for start up, as most programs with open in background to check for updates.

Also Defrag HDD.

Maybe consider upgrading to Windows 8.

My Windows 7 Boot time was about 1min 30seconds. With a Windows 8 Upgrade, taking all programs and docs across (effectively same OS Size) It boots in 19 seconds from a full shutdown, including switching off at the wall.

Thanks all, I'll answer too all now..

I dont have a budget.. I open to any price really, But of course nothing stupid as were all know there are some silly prices out there! Im deffo looking at getting a new SSD drive as a lot of people have been saying there amazing..

tally2425 > i average about 180 FPS on LoL (I was just naming it as a game i played)

OliverDavis > Ive got good general knowledge on system's and ive done the whole msconfig startup, But im not keen on getting windows 8.. I personally, dont like the look of it!But ive heard great things about it!

Id rather stay towards the Nvidia side of graphics as ive been with them since day one! although i hear AMD proformance is amazing at a better price!

Leprechaun312 > id go for a bigger SSD then a 120GB, Maybe something along the lines of 200GB maybe? Any other suggestions? Id also just do a new format onto it also, I wouldnt copy anythiing over. Id start from scratch.. recommended?

Should i change my RAM at all? Its pretty crap so ive been reading compared to others?!?!

Thanks guy's!

You haven't told us the resolution of your monitor and the game settings you've applied. If you game at 1920 with full AA/AF then chances you'll get a slow down on an older mid-range card.

Replacing the card depends on your budget. I know you said your an Nvidia fan, but why the loyalty? Go for what best for you and your wallet.

This is a great for under £300 and i certainly wish i bought one instead of the 670 i bought.

next down from that is the 7950 coming in under £240

This will certainly play all your games at 1920 at decent settings

further down is the 7870 for under £150.

Again the is won't disappoint.

I havn't picked AMD cards on purpose. I have chosen what i think is best value for their money at the moment and those cards are on special at the moment. Of course, it's just my opinion. Given you'll get a decent return still on your exiting card, i think it's a worth while net investment.

I think any less than this and you'll start to compromise your performance but as i said, if your gaming at 1600px for example, the choices are greater at the lower end.

SSD is an option for you, but merely at boot up and loading times. Things will be a lot more responsive but i doubt it will help your frame rates. That said, it's a very worth while upgrade.

As for your RAM.. 8gb of 1600Mhz is fine.

Upgrade graphics card for better game performance.. SSD is a good secondary upgrade worth doing, But the main performance increase for gaming will be from the higher end graphics card. Your CPU, Mobo and RAM are still decent and no point upgrading especially with that nice overclock.

I honestly don't think there is anything wrong with his current parts, As all the parts are better than mine and mine runs some on everything at high settings. Unless one of his parts is faulty.

Admiral Huddy > I play all games at max settings 1920, i will be getting a
  • Benq XL2420T 24" TRUE 120Hz 3D Vision 2.0 Widescreen LED Monitor - Black/Red [9H.L7PLB.QBE]

So a card to suit that would be brilliant, I have been reading a lot of posts about AMD cards and people have been telling me there a lot better for your money and preformance. I take it no body recommends to upgrade my RAM at all then? I think my best option is to buy a SSD first and get a decent graphics card afterwards...?

I do like the 2 cards you posted

But is there a great difference between them, I mean.. for what im using them for? Im not doing heavy gaming! Ive just always liked a decent set up!
