So I have a gen8 microserver set up with esxi and xpenology, therefore I have at least 3 'things' that I may want to ssh into from outside the LAN. Since they're all behind one wan IP how would I do this?

As Uhtred says really, that latter is security through obscurity but I did do it for many years without any issues ... don't open port 22 though that's asking for constant attacks.

Does the synology software provide an openvpn server with cloud dynamic dns addressing (the QNAP equivalent does) which works quite well as a simple solution? I can VPN into my NAS VPN server from my phone, for instance, and then SSH into other systems once connected.

OpenVPN or use non standard ports and forward them with your router

what this man says, i would go with router because chances are if the server is off you cant vpn in to turn it on, also most ILO functions requires a license key to do anything useful although im not sure on the micro servers

Yeah, synology does have capability to run a vpn server, but as leigh_boy says, it's not bullet proof, practically.

I might not have a good solution since esxi starts from usb stick and always seems to disable ssh when it restarts :(
