How to stop cats messing up your garden....?

In my garden, the missus (in her wisdom) suggested a border and some bark chipping (to the tune of about 9 square meters) to stop cats from digging the flowerbeds and leaving their nasty little deposits there!

However, we now know that the local cats just love digging up and leaving their number two's all over this bark chip.

Not wanting to hurt the little darlings, but wanting to dissuade them from using my garden as a public lavatory, what options do I have to stop the cats from being cats and to stop the kids coming in with footballs covered in cat mess (and clothes).

Options I can't do is: Keep the kids in. Or get a dog. Or get some sort of ultrasonic deterrent.

Anyone got any ideas? Netting? Shingle (if so, what's the best size, I heard they dig in the small stuff)?

Kids were desperate to get out in the garden (until the rain came).

So any ideas? Remember - I don't want to hurt them ;)

Getting a cat is probably your best option id think!

With dogs they just happily come into the garden when they aren't around.

Dog doesn't work, cats are like ninjas, they'll sneak in and poop while the dog is doing something else. Plus dogs are messy enough on their own, especially if your mutt decides that theres something buried in your flowerbed and it wants to dig it out. (like my poor dead gerbil) :(

I do have a cat, and he is the worst culprit (I thought they were supposed to go into other peoples gardens? :) )

Have tried the lemon peel option. Worked temporarily but only for a few days....

my front garden flower bed gets used by a local cat, we thought it was the naighbours (cat) but they moved and its still happening, we plan to get a cat soon so hoping that will fix it.
