Is there a fast and easy way to tell if the evga gtx480 I have bought is a good overclocking card?
If not I would like to return it.

go into msi afterburner, set the top number to 850, press apply, run furmark, if it dies then you don't have a good card any more

Make sure you have a block of cheese handy before you try any of the suggesstions above.

Seriosly....no shop is going to take your card back because it doesn't overclock. Now if it's within the terms of the distance sellling regs and you can send it back as new then you should get our money back but after that forget about it. To be honest overclocking a 480gtx on air is going to give minimal gains and cause maximum heat issues, unless you are going to put it under water in which case warranty is voided anyway.

The GTX480 is meant to overclock well-enough under air. It gets hot under air anyway, but using a more aggressive fan profile (which many do anyway) should bring temperatures down. Even if they don't overclock all that well (say 5%, although that is worse than is likely) you'll still get near 1:1 gains in performance as clock speed, as Fermi scales very well with overclocking.

Less of the obvious flaming/trolling guys.

Most 480's will easily reach 800MHz. Make sure you have MSI afterburner and GPU-Z and just clock up step by step. I have found that you don't need to adjust any voltage until your reach around 850MHz.
