How to tell timing belt has been changed?

Not really, a full service history means the engine stands a chance of being mechanically sound but it doesn't mean the rest of the car is in top condition.

I agree, which is why I used generally. :p In my mind if someone takes care with servicing and spends some money on a car they'll hopefully be looking after the entire car.

In the OP's case I'd probably walk away.

You aren't going to be able to tell the condition of an engine's internals by looking at ink stamps in a book either.

No, but a car that's been serviced properly is going te be more likely to be in better condition.

Cosmetic condition and history are both equally important, the OPs car is missing one so should be ignored

Well didn't go to see it today as the weather's been poor, too cloudy and dark and pouring with rain, not the ideal weather for checking out the car, maybe a good omen? lol

If the mechanicals were good would have probably brought it if the owner accepted 1k for it, and believe me that is as good a price you can get for these cars, most on the market are ridiculously overpriced, there are plenty of lower specced and high miles cars asking for silly money, I think it's worse in London where people put extra premium on cars. We've gone and seen a few other accords who have had service history, but they had issues, one was clearly involved in a minor prang and another had a gearbox that was on it's last leg, but it's nice to have the reassurance of a service history as you know the car has at least been looked after fairly well in terms of its mechanical bits.

Thanks for all the advice.

The 99s are generally sound but history is ideal. I know mine for example is due a cambelt in about 8k ( has 135K on the clock) and to get it through the MOT yesterday cost £500.

This was for a new rear brake hose, new rear number plate lol, bulbs and then both upper arms in the suspension needed doing. The only advisories I have are for the brakes which will need done in the new year. The guy at the garage advised me to run it into the ground as in terms of the engine, gearbox and clutch it is in great condition, there are no electrical problems and it drives very well.

I'm inclined to agree with him in that it probably won't really need any work done to keep it running other than wear and tear/servicing for another couple of years. The cambelt will be a bridge I'll cross when I come to it and may very well end up selling in the new year. Used prices are very broad for these so I would expect 1k to 2k depending on how recent the MOT, condition and make of tyres and brake/disc condition. I think that this is the most important factor in your choice. Remember, 4 new decent tyres will be around £300 and another £200 or so to do the brakes.
