How to test new drive

Not brought a new drive for ages but in the past I used to do a full format the first time to check for bad sectors. Is that still relevant or are there better tools out there for the initial test?

If it's a harddrive, I always do a quick/basic test with the manufacturer's tools, then a full/thorough test. If both pass, then I do a full format regardless.

It'll take about 2 hours for the full test, and another 2 hours for the format. But to me, the peace of mind is worth it.
