How to treat your old CPU

its fake... they put a hole in the motherboard and a firework underneath it or something, in one of their videos you can even see the PC which is outputting to the monitor under the table.

I just said to the missuss when I took the heatsink off my 2000XP it just shut straight down and worked again, I've also done it with a 939 3000 it shut down as well, the thermal cut outs really do work.

I haven't even clicked the Youtube link and I also bet it's the 'AMD blowing up video' that was faked a couple of years ago.

Yeah it is. The sad thing is that it was clearly meant to be a joke. But people are all like "OMG thats so FAKE" and for some reason getting genuinely angered at it.

No.. really?

Whenever I've seen a link to it, the poster seems to think it's real.

With the original Athlon and early Athlon XP and Duron chips it wasn't there and/or didn't work. While they wouldn't explode, they would die in a poof of smoke. Later Socket A and all 64 chips are fine. :)

Yep I confirm that.

"I'll just check the bios settings a second, no need to fasten the HSF back on tightly"

"Hrm, blank screen"

:o:(

Seen that vid before, its fake. No smoke or anything with mine, the old Cyrix chips were durable, the hsf fell off mine so I used a table fan and it was ok

Early XP had it, tried this with a very early 1500+ Pally and it shut off with no ill effect, its the boards that did'nt fully support it right in the beginning and hence they failed on them.

It didn't explode and it didn't smoke. It just went pop!
IIRC I forgot to put the HSF on.

There's an amusing Tom's Hardware video where they take the HS off an old Athlon XP, it heats up to 370c or something and billows smoke everywhere.
