How to turn auto renewal off (xbox live)

This thread finally made me go and turn off auto renew, 15 minutes on the phone (10 listening to rubbish music) couple bits of info and its off, easy enough but wish I didn't have to ring them.

Two questions:

1. Can you turn off auto-renew whenever you like or only when your subscription is about to end?

2. Do they ask for your name? I think I must have been drunk when I signed up to XBL because apparently my surname is Phalange.

1. I'd think so mine renewed on the first and I stopped it same day

2. Yes, I had a similar problem to yourself but managed to get in with all my other details.

Doesnt bother me at all. I'm a gamer :) been on live 5+ years

But why would you think it's good that people who don't want it can't switch it off?

I've found xbox live to be very disappointing really, matchmaking on Halo 3 takes an inordinate amount of time, despite an apparent population of 13,000, there's only a couple of hundred in any one room at most and you end up spending more time in the lobby than playing. Halo 1 had much better online play on the PC, browse from a list of games including official dedicated Bungie servers and then immediately join one, you weren't penalised for wanting to quit a game ruined by lag, you could also create your own dedicated server with any modifications to the game you liked, best of all it was free. Peer to peer SUCKS.

I don't see this as such a big deal. They're a business and live subscriptions are a source of income.
They're very good at refunding, despite the disclaimer small print that appears whenever you purchase MS points online, that type of thing. But consumers aren't so forthcoming when their subscription expires and they only remember to renew it when they find they can't get on a game of Black Ops a week after it ran out. Everone I have heard of getting their account hacked has come out of it alright, critical account changes like this being restricted to phone calls only are good for security.

Bit of a mish-mash of random justifications, but I think blatant and unreasonable profiteering is a lazy accusation, which isn't very well thought out.

No it's perfectly correct, taking into account all the available evidence. Microsoft make it as difficult as possible to cancel the account so that people forget and resubscribe when they had no intention of doing so, this clearly shows a disregard for the customer. I've subscribed to many services in the past such as Amazon prime and guess what? They all allow you to cancel online. The fact that they used to let you do it online clearly shows it has nothing to do with security, you would have to be gullible to believe that considering bank accounts can be closed online.
