I've just got myself a new phone. Its the first time ive ever had a smart phone. I'm on a pay as you go tariff which does have internet access but at stupid prices and since ill never use it as an internet tool I need to make sure its all turned off. I am getting an 'H' next to a signal bar at the top of the phone. Is this saying its connected to the net? I have turned off the 'data' option.
The only thing this phone will be used for is to make phone calls over Virgin network.

I know it has connected to the net when I first turned it on because my top up has decreased by quite a bit.

When I try to use a net app it wont connect so that should be fairly hard evidence that its not connect in any way? I'm just wondering about the 'H'.

Buy an Ovivo sim for £15, get PAC from your current provider, port number over, enjoy 150 minutes, 250 texts and 500MB data per month for £0.00 per month. If you need more minutes and texts, they do that too

I got my mum an Ovivo SIM as she wanted to get a smartphone for "doing the internet" :p porting the number from o2 took one phone call for the PAC and one working day for Ovivio to activate the number. Overall, could not be more impressed with the service, I am looking after the billing (if you could call it that as it's basically free for her usage pattern) and noticed this on the site

OVIVO Network Issue – Resolved
What’s happened?

At 2:40pm on the 6th September, we made you aware of an issue currently affecting customers on the OVIVO network that may impact your ability to use the calling and text messaging functions on your phone. At 2:30am, our engineers and network partner resolved this issue and brought the network back to full service.

Why has this happened?

Now that full service has been restored, we’ll work with our network partner to establish why this happened.

What did you do?

We worked alongside our Network Partner and engineering team to resolve this as quickly as possible. We kept you informed by updating you hourly until 1am and letting you know this morning that the issue was resolved once we’d fully tested the resolution our network partner has put in place.

No idea there was any problems and they credited her account with £3, assume it because of this? IDK, but thumbs up from me. The ad supported browsing really is unobtrusive, not even going to try and circumvent it :)

£3 was for porting your number i assume:)
As i did not get any comp for loss of service:p

I am also an Ovivo user, for a low usage deal I think it is superb. I only send 30-50 texts a month, I use email instead. I also have access to wifi in many places so the 500mb a mth data just about does me.

Wait am i missing something about Ovivo.. or is it literally a one off £15 payment for
150 mins
250 texts
500MB data

per month..? Just with the occasional advert when browsing? Definitely switching to that when my contract is up in april if so

There is ads when you open your browser, literally 5 seconds. Very unobtrusive and an absolute bargain for light users. Won't suit everyone, but they do have paid monthly tariffs with more stuff.

e: obviously, when on wifi, you don't see the ads at all. Their account page is also the best I have seen from a mobile provider, it's all there where you's expect to see stuff. I thought all the glowing reviews online were shills, nope. Count me among the shills now :D

Epic. Sounds perfect as i only use about 100 mins and more fb/whatsapp than texts these days unless i'm in a **** signal area. Shame i'm in contract till april :(

The SIM is kind of free, the £15 you pay goes onto credit, which is used like a pay as you go setup when you either use your 150 minutes or call a number not covered by the inclusive allowance. The SIM they send is quite clever, it's a full sized jobbie which is punched out around the chip - you can use it in an old mobile and then push it out to be a micro SIM for more modern stuff
